10 Great Deep Rock Galactic Tips and Tricks for Beginners (2024)

There are dozens of ways to deal with the overwhelming waves of danger within the depths of the space mines. Each dwarf has access to their unique equipment, weapons, and utilities that can impact a mission in various ways. With so many options, there are loads of tips & tricks to learn. As the game evolves, players are still discovering new ways to get the upper hand against the swarms of Hoxxes. Today we will show you ten impactful tips and tricks that can aid you in your future Deep Rock Galactic missions.

1. Get Up & Stay Up

Iron Will is one of the strongest active perks in Deep Rock Galactic. Once each mission, you can revive yourself for 12 seconds before going back down again. When you are in Iron Will, your weapons are reloaded, you have x1.2 movement speed, your pickaxe does x2.5 increased damage, and the power attack cooldown is divided by three.

Additionally, while you are in Iron Will, you also have a 30% slow reduction. Additionally, you are immune to all damage and can still interact with items or revive teammates. This perk is a great temporary get-out-of-jail-free card. You can use it to revive a teammate and save the mission or get yourself into a better position to be revived while cutting down swarms of bugs for a few glorious moments.

Even if the tooltip for Iron Will says you will return to being in the downed state, did you know that you can stay alive after Iron Will’s timer expires? If you have any way of healing yourself during the duration of Iron Will, you still stay alive as if nothing ever happened. Look around and see if there is Red Sugar or a resupply nearby. If you can be healed during the 12 seconds of immunity, you will be revived fully. This is true even if you heal yourself to just one HP.

The perk Vampire also works in combination with Iron Will’s full revive. This is because Vampire heals HP for killing any medium or large-sized creature with a melee attack. Remember that Iron Will can only be used once per mission. Yet, turning a temporary revive into a complete resurrection makes Iron Will incredibly powerful.

We hope you have found this to be one of the most useful Deep Rock Galactic tips on our list. Remember that DRG perks, if used well, can have a large impact on your gameplay.

2. Bug Repellent Tricks in Deep Rock Galactic

The Engineer’s Platform Gun has many uses that can aid in tons of scenarios. Patching holes, preventing fall damage, and making platforms are the main uses for this gun. However, there is a weapon modification called Repellant Additive in the perk tree for the Platform Gun. It makes enemies avoid walking on the produced foam whenever possible.

A tip and trick for using this perk in Deep Rock Galactic is to create a line to prevent bugs from walking, such as an overhang. If you are defending a Hacking Pod or a communications uplink, making a foam line will help focus bugs away from your flank or from appearing above you. If there is too much foam placed around you, the bugs pathing will ignore the foam if there is no other way to get to you. Strategic placement of bug-repelling foam helps herd & control the swarm of bugs into the firing line; combined with Engineer’s turrets; this tip strengthens his role as a class.

3. Driller’s Instant Killing Guns

Driller’s primary weapon arsenal all focuses on different elemental damage. The CRSPR Flamethrower, the Cryo Cannon, and the newly added Corrosive Sludge Pump primarily use elemental damage. The Cryo Cannon is one of the strongest weapons out of all three choices for Driller’s primaries. The Cyro Cannon freezes enemies solid. This allows them to take more damage for a short time and results in easier kills.

The hidden strength of the Cyro Cannon is its ability to handle any flying bug that the swarms of Hoxxes can throw at you. If an enemy is airborne, freezing them results in the bug falling out of the air and killing them instantly. We hope you can use this Deep Rock Galactic tip to crush whole waves of flying enemies!

While the Cyro cannon doesn’t work on the new Rival Tech Robots, the flamethrower makes quick work of these machines. If a robot overheats, they die instantly, which can result in more hackable Patrol Bots if you are lucky.

Corrosive gas & slime from the sludge pump is highly flammable. Combining Driller’s secondary, the Experimental Plasma Charger, with the Plasma Burn perk, which allows regular shots to do fire damage, will enable you to detonate any slime from the sludge pump quickly. Maximizing different elemental types is one of our best tips and tricks in Deep Rock Galactic that makes Driller extremely powerful when in the right situations.

4. Cool Down Gunner’s Minigun Faster

Gunner’s first primary weapon is the Minigun. It is the only primary in his arsenal that doesn’t require reloading. Instead, it works on an overheating system. If you have ever tried to reload with the Minigun, Gunner will spin the three barrels of the gun instead of reloading.

All weapons in Deep Rock Galactic have an extra animation whenever you try to reload a gun while the magazine is full. These little animations bring more character to the game, but did you know that Gunner’s minigun cools during this animation. If Gunner overheats, you won’t be able to fire the weapon for ten seconds unless you balance the heat gage.

Some modifications can be purchased to help balance this heat gauge but spinning the gun shaves off a few seconds of waiting for the Minigun to cool down. Using this great trick makes a minor difference in how quickly the weapon cools, but the less time you spend waiting means more bug killing.

5. Our Simplest Deep Rock Galactic Tip – Shoot the Red Sugar

Sometimes Red Sugar is often placed in the hard-to-reach areas or directly on the ceiling. If you need health, but you don’t want to waste a charge of a Resupply, you can shoot down chunks of Red Sugar. Whenever possible, it is always better to mine, but high caliber weapons such as Gunner’s Bulldog Heavy Revolver chip through Red Sugar with ease. One of our simplest tips for Deep Rock Galactic players is to just make sure you stay as topped up on health as possible.

Some guns like Driller’s flamethrower can’t mine this mineral, or some take longer to break chunks of Red Sugar like Scout’s Zhukov NUK17 Submachine Gun. If you have ammo to spare and need health quickly, look around for some Red Sugar on the ceiling to shoot down next time.

6. Deadly Resupplies can Kill Tough Enemies

By now, most of you have figured out from being tricked or accidentally standing underneath a Resupply pod that if it lands on you, it kills you. Every time you call down a Resupply, it digs its way down through the map until it reaches you. On its way, it digs through anything in its path. Dwarfs, minerals, rock, or even bugs, a Resupply Pod Will dig right through it.

Sadly, this method can’t kill Dreadnaughts anymore. This trick used to work in the early days of Deep Rock Galactic before Dreadnaughts got their model changes. While it’s hard to keep bugs still, it is still a fun way to heavily damage or even outright kill a Glyphid Oppressor, which saves a ton of ammo if you can line the pod up correctly.

7. You Can Reduce Fall Damage in DRG

There are typically two types of fall damage in most video games. These include death from falling a certain distance or falling fast enough to die. In Deep Rock Galactic, you will only take falling damage based on how quickly you fall. There are a few ways to help lessen your fall damage. You can accomplish this with the Tunnel Rat brew, Scout’s armor core upgrade, or falling on Engineer’s upgraded platforms. Additionally, two natural surfaces also reduce falling damage, Snow from the Glacial Strata and goo from the Fungus Bogs or Mactera Goo Bombers.

Some Overclocks like Scout’s Special Powder help reset the falling speed to thus reduce falling damage. Look for ledges, Gunners, Ziplines, Engineer platforms, or anything that can help you slow down instead of rocketing to the bottom of a cave. Use anything to break up your falling speed. It could save your life. Scout’s grappling hook makes this easy, as shooting it in midair immediately cuts any fall damage if you pull yourself to the surface you’re falling onto. This is a simple insight, but these Deep Rock Galactic tips and tricks can save you and your allies from having to try to rescue your body from the body of a chasm swarming with enemies!

8. Tips and Tricks to Make Haunted Caves Easier in Deep Rock Galactic

If you are a more experienced dwarf in Deep Rock Galactic, you have become familiar with the various mission Mutators. One of the most challenging Mutators is Haunted Cave, where an invulnerable ghost of a Bulk Detonator chases you around the entire mission. Bulk Detonators are one of the deadliest enemies in the game but are also one of the slowest.

While it cannot be stopped or killed, the ghost is vulnerable to slow effects. Use electrocution such as Scouts IFG grenades or Drillers Corrosive Sludge Pump to slow the ghost down even further. We recommend using the sludge pump since there’s more ammo for it and its perk tree allows for the choice of extra slowing power. If you use this trick for dealing with the Hunted Caves ghost, you and your team will earn a nice 30% Hazard bonus reward on mission completion.

9. Protecting the Drilldozer

Escort Duty is one of the newer missions added to Deep Rock Galactic. The objective is to escort a Drilldozer named Doretta to an Ommoran Heartstone so she can drill out its core. A few extra tricks players have found to be more efficient for protecting her during the mission. One small tip is although everyone can fix Doretta, only one dwarf needs to. No matter how many people help repair the Drilldozers armor, only one person can make progress. If you have a team, only one person fixes Doretta while the rest focus on the bugs attacking her.

Another tip or trick for beginner Deep Rock Galactic players is during the second phase of the Ommoran Heartstone fight. If you have an Engineer on your team, the platform gun can be used to build a makeshift roof to block the rocks from hitting Doretta. Each stone will destroy the platform, so continuous rebuilding is needed to maintain the makeshift shield.

Fair warning, the transition between phases causes the Heartstone to explode, thus destroying any platforms created. Make sure to build your bunker at the beginning of phase two, or else you will lose your defenses. One more tip for the Ommoran Heartsone fight is for the fourth and final phase. At the end of the fight, the Heartstone will spawn Ommoran Beamers. These are large destructible crystals that fire lasers at the Drilldozer.

If you don’t have a driller to mine through these crystals quickly and have a high-caliber weapon, you can shoot the top of the crystals to disable them. If an Ommoran Beamers tip breaks, the laser won’t work. It’s a small but helpful trick if you absolutely can’t leave Doretta alone during phase four.

10. Freeze the Bugs!

Our last Deep Rock Galactic tip and trick is likely well known but is still a complete lifesaver. Most dwarfs are familiar with what happens when a Glyhpid Bulk Detonator does when it arrives. Every large attack from these walking bombs causes an explosion around them and an even bigger one when it dies. When a Bulk Detonator is defeated, the resulting blast and flaming chunks of rock often have a chance to down a few players.

One way to save yourself or your team is to freeze the Bulk Detonator before it explodes. If your Scout has Cryo Grenades, or your Driller has a Cryo Cannon, freeze the bug solid before killing it. All frozen bugs don’t trigger their on-death effects, including Praetorians, Exploders, and Detonators. However, In the Bulk Dentonator’s case, the knockback from the explosion will still occur. Yet, there’s no damage or crater left behind. In the future, if you have any way to freeze bugs before they die, make sure to utilize it for the sake of your team’s survival.
