Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake›Guides
by Scott White on 14 November, 2024
While the more recent entries to Square Enix's long-running Dragon Quest series may allow players to allocate stat points as they see fit, Dragon Quest III and its new HD-2D Remakevariation harkens back to a different time when this wasn't the case. Instead, points were randomly assigned, with different stats growing faster or slower depending on that character's "Personality". Maintaining and swapping in and out these special parameters, such as "Daredevil" and "Gourmand," are important to consider to create the ideal party. More importantly, if you want to tackle the new HD-2D's new post-game bosses and content,

This guide will break down each Personality and reveal the methods for changing a character's personality to achieve the best stat growth in your desired area.
What the Attributes do
Before you start changing around your party's Personalities, let's quickly explain what exactly each stat does first.
Strength: How much damage physical attacks do
Resilience: Reduces damage taken by physical attacks
Agility: Determines the order in which a character will act during combat
Stamina: How much HP a character gains when they level up

Wisdom: How much damage and healing a character's spells do and how much MP a character gains when they level up
Luck: Impacts how much damage physical attacks do and the chance of your character landing a critical hit. It also impacts a character's chances of being afflicted with a status ailment.
How to change Personalities:
Equipment:
Equipping various accessories is the best reusable method to change a character's Personality. These accessories, such as the "Rabit Tail" accessory and "Garter," will change the personality as long as the character has it equipped and will revert to their prior personality. You can tell if an accessory will change it by reading its description, where you will see the new Personality's text being slightly bolded.
Books:
Unlike equipping accessories, Books (such as "The Eureka Moment" that grants the Genius Personality) are single-use items that permanently change a character's Personality. This means that not only do you lose the book item itself but also that to return that character's previous Personality, you will need to either find its associated book or an accessory that grants it. Books are commonly found on bookshelves in towns and various buildings.
The Personality Quiz

When you begin Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, this quiz is what determines the Hero’s starting personality. You'll be asked a series of questions, and based on your answers, the final part of the quiz will be a short scenario. How you respond in the scenario will result in the final chosen personality for the Hero.
Once you are past the Tutorial and wake up, you can access the menu and select Misc. then Status to verify that you ended up with the personality that you wanted.
You can reference the following wiki reference for guidance on how to answer the quiz depending on which personality you want to have. Note that the HD-2D remake may not follow this flowchart exactly, since it is based on earlier versions, but it should be very close. This chart is courtesy of StrategyWiki:
